Twinmusix were lucky to Skype interview with Piotr (Peter) Wiwczarke from Vader this week! Vader is a Polish metal band that started in 1983. Vader found their way in 1989 when they released their first casset tape to the public titled 'Necrolust'.

In 1990 Vader released 'Morbid Reich' which lead them to international success. TWINMUSIX IS HERE WITH PIOTR (PETER) WIWCZAREK FROM VADER, WE ARE SUPER EXCITED TO SEE BOTH OF VADER AND KREATOR COMING DOWN TO AUSTRALIA NEXT WEEKEND FOR YOUR TOUR. HOW IS SINGAPORE GOING?

We just arrived and I would just want a bit of sleep because I just want some sleep. It was a long trip from Poland many hours. It’s the only opportunity to talk to you

IN 1989 YOU RELEASED YOUR FIRST TAPE NECROLUST, WHAT GAVE YOU YOUR INSPIRATION TO DRAW THE ALBUM COVER WHAT AND WAS THE MEANING BEHIND THE ALBUM COVER?

Necrolust was the very first recording for Vader it was a very poorly equipped studio. We actually prefer to do an interview like this. You know metal music was something different and metal was something fresh epically the type of metal music we wanted to record back then because we are one of those bands that are pioneers of extreme metal in Poland. The only way to record something really professional in the 80’s was just to have some connections to record, so the trick was to buy a bottle of good vodka for the owner of a rock evening and he introduced new bands and different bands like punk or folk music or anything else. You had to prepare some songs for the evening show. So we did record the four songs and nobody asked what we were going to do with those songs. So we used those as a demo tape and called it Necrolust we made a copy and that was the only way so many bands around the world did it and so did Vader. But it was ten times harder to do that. The cover was my idea I found some pictures, I corrected it with a pencil and added some handmade letters on that and I visited a printer company and then I composed everything, it took a lot of time to make it professional. Today you can use your computer to make the music and cover in your house it’s really easily to make it real professional.  In 88 and 89 it was different and you had to spend days and weeks to make it good looking and good sounding.

IN 2016 YOU RELEASED YOUR ALBUM “THE EMPIRE” WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE SONG TO PERFORM LIVE FROM THIS ALBUM AND WHY?

I can’t answer that question, I can say and explain because it’s like kids in a family I can’t say which kid is my favourite so I love all of them and I prefer all of them. So it’s like do we jam with them or not so at every show after every recording.  We choose some songs and put them on the set list and then we play them. If fans like them they become a permanent part of the next set list. I would like to play every song recorded by Vader in the last three decades. But our fans decide what is most popular and what is most wanted and then we have to listen to them. Trying to be the ‘proud guy’, you try to perform something different which we never performed before just to make it different because you don’t like to play the same song all the time. I was looking at the last set list we did for Australia. But for this trip we are going to do a combination of old and new. So expected something from the last recorded album and something we created in the very beginning because there wasn’t too much of that on our first trip to Australia.

YOU HAVE PERFORMED AT WAKEN OPEN AIR, WHAT IS IT LIKE PERFORMING IN FRONT OF SUCH A BIG AUDIENCE?

It’s always very emotional because Waken became a very wanted place for every metal head in Europe. It’s always such an honour to play in such a auditorium every band has it as a hit point in their summer festival list.

YOUR DEMO “MORBID REICH” SOLD OVER 10,000 COPIES AND IS CONSIDERED TO BE ONE OF THE BEST DEATH METAL DEMOS IN THE WORLD. HOW DID YOU ACHIEVE THAT?

We recorded that in the same studio that we recorded Necrolust in a year after Necrolust. A year after means we were more prepared for the studio and more experienced as a band after one year of existence and we had new people working in the studio. But the demo tape still sounded underground and this was important to us because it gave us a contract with epic records so we had a chance to record an debut album with biggest and best extreme company they had a lot of bands under their wings like Napalm Death and Morbid Angel and to be in a big family was a big deal. Because of that we got to join some massive bands on tour and that was very good for us in a big way.

HOW WAS PLAYING WITH METALLICA?

It was good, we played in Poland we were a local act for Metallica and Slipknot and it was surprising to us that James and Lars meet us and they asked us if we were satisfied with the roadies or needed anything. They were already huge they were so close to the bands and fans even if they were a local band. 60 thousand people were screaming for Vader.

SO YOU HAVE DONE TOURS WITH KREATOR BEFORE, WHAT IS YOUR CRAZIEST TOUR STORY?

I could write a book about that I am too tired to bring back memories, I usually try to keep in my mind good memories and bad stories there’s a lot of them even dangerous stories. After thousands of shows there must be a good and bad story.

YOU PERFORM AMAZINGLY ON STAGE, WHAT CAN FANS EXPECT FOR THIS TOUR?

Expect a good show in Vader style. It’s just us here. And am sure it’s going to be really good especially when we come with such a great band like Kreator.

WHERE DO YOU SEE YOUR BAND SOUND IN THE FUTURE, ARE YOU LOOKING FOR A SIMILAR SOUND OR ARE YOU GOING TO GO IN A DIFFERENT DIRECTION?

We have followed the same way from the beginning we are going to be a extreme band but extreme has different faces and I would like to say we sound the same, we play the same way we aren’t going to play different music because fans follow and support us, because we are Vader and we don’t copy ourselves but we keep the spirit of Vader we play with different people and different line ups so we record a different album. We use different studios and different equipment, we are more experienced but we try to keep the same spirit in the music and the fans can find different things even if they know Vader is Vader and I’m not going to change just to find the next fans just to have better selling we aren’t looking for better selling we are looking for honest fans.

HOW DID YOU PICK THE NAME VADER FOR YOUR BAND? WHAT’S THE STORY BEHIND IT? HOW DID VADER FORM, HOW DID YOU ALL MEET?

We are a band from the 80s and we are named Vader and Darth Vader was defiantly our inspiration and we were looking for something that sounds good as a name and that means something and back then Darth Vader was a symbol of dark power a symbol of something mysterious and unknown something behind a mask. You know the powerful guy but you don’t know the face. Ironically today there are many bands that use the masks on stage and hide behind the masks but personally I hate it must be inserting but personally I prefer to show the face and perform under the name of someone in a mask and being unmasked on stage. But Darth Vader presence from the 80s was inspiration for the name.

DO YOU HAVE ANY NEW ALBUMS COMING OUT SOON?

We started to work on that, but we are touring so we are not thinking about new albums the time will come and it will probably come at the end of 2018 when we start  to get stronger and only think about recordings on the new songs but not now. We are still touring with the last album the empire so it’s really going to stay with us for the next year.

DO YOU WRITE ALL YOUR MUSIC TOGETHER OR SEPARATELY?

A band is a band I’m just the main person who writes the most I create music with the drummer is the next important person in the band because he creates the beat and is the backbone of the song  and if spider creates his song it’s his song. So we divide the work between the guitarists and the drummers and if I got my songs I work with the drummer and then we record in the studio and then we work with recorded songs before performing it live.

WHAT IS YOUR VIEW ON ALL THE DIFFERENT GENRES OF METAL THAT WE HAVE CREATED TODAY?

Everything changed since metal became a part of the music business so it’s changed people’s minds its good and bad the good thing is that metal is more common in the media. It was different in the past metal music was not wanted in the music industry and we were proud of that. But today it’s easy to play metal and to play a good show on a real big stage. There’s many people that aren’t really into metal music they just follow the popular bands because they are popular. They sometimes pull out the metal jacket in the summer season because the band is popular and then they put it away and forget about it till next season. Metal hats and jackets started with hats and emotion they were a league a side. It's became popular so it’s lost this elite tag. But there are old guys who wear the metal jacket and proud. Who cares of if it’s popular or not.  .That’s why I became a metal head and became a metal fan and that why I decide to create metal.
