Twinmusix got to speak to Andy from Sweet about their upcoming tour and more.
TM - Hi, this is Amelia and Elizabeth from Twinmusix, and we are here with Andy from Sweet. Thank you for having this interview with us today. We appreciate it.
AY - Thank you.
TM - What can fans expect from your Australian tour?
AY - It would be rude not to play all the hit records, so there will be a scattering of all our hits. We had quite a few heavy rock songs on our album, so hopefully we will play a few of those. We brought out a new album in 2024 called "Full Circle", so we will be playing some of that, and you never know, we might cover a song.
TM - What's your favourite song off your album "Full Circle"?
AY - My favourite track was a song called "Circus".
TM - What was your writing and recording process for "Full Circle"?
AY - I have a studio in the house, and I get the guys to come down and write stuff. We went to Peter Gabriel's studio, called Real World Studio, to record the drums because he has a big open space that we don't have here, and it was nice to be there for three days. I have used that studio a lot, and if we need something that we have forgotten, we get the guys to do it in the studio at home and send it to us. Most of the time, we like to be together, because it gets the feel of the band.
TM - If you could have any band play one of your songs, what band would it be, what song would it be, and would it be in your style or their style?
AY - We have had quite a few bands cover our songs. Def Leppard covered Our Song "Action". Quite a few people have covered Our Song "Ballroom Blitz". I think it would be cool to hear what "Deep Purple" would do to "Fox on the Run" In their style. We also used to have the Red Hot Chilli Peppers do "Fox On The Run" as an encore.
In fact, we have an idea for our next album. We get some other bands to cover our songs for half our album, and we do new songs for the other half of the album.
TM - Have you started working on your new album?
AY - The other guys have started working on some new material. I am the type of guy who finds myself editing too quickly. I get an idea, and I'm like, I can't do that, that is terrible, but the song might be ok. I only like finishing songs that I think are going to go places, so I tend to do more of the lyrics at the moment rather than the music.
TM - Who was the first band or Artist you saw, and can you tell us a story?
AY - My brother and I went to see the film The Young Ones with Cliff Richard & The Shadows. We sat there with our mouths open when the Shadows were playing with those Fender guitars, and that was the start of it all.
TM - Who was your favourite artist you have seen live?
AY - I was very fortunate to have Jeff Beck play at a Rock Against Cancer fundraiser, before he passed away. I talked to him and looked at his guitar. I was a bit of a fan, and I am not normally like that. My first words to him were, let me look at your guitar, will you and he handed me his guitar. I had a good look at it and asked him a few questions about it, and he said to me, I have a workshop and I tinker with my guitars all the time.
TM - If you could go back in a time machine, who would you see live?
AY - I think I would like to go back and sit in a club while "Django Reinhardt" was playing during the 1930's. There is a Jazz player called "Wes Montgomery", I would like to see him live. I have seen all the contemporary bands, I have seen Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Black Sabbath.
TM - Is there anything else you want to say to your fans?
AY - When we come to Australia, come and see us, and if you see us around, come and say hi to us. Keep the faith. We do have a
worldwide YouTube channel with all our videos on it, and you can ask us questions and leave messages on it.
