ANOXIA, REVOCATION AND SUFFOCATION REVIEW

19/04/2024

Anoxia, Revocation and Suffocation played at the factory theatre this weekend and they have an iron grip on the extreme metal scene.

Anoxia from Sydney kicked off the night and their music was frantic with thrashy pulse vibes, precision attacks, and melodic elevated riffs. As the band spoke to the crowd everyone started chanting "Anoxia" and the band continued to play. The frequent tempo changes, complex, riffs, immensely powerful, creative drumming, and epic, smackdown grooves showed the band had sheer agility and complex rhythms.

Next up were US progressive death and thrash metallers Revocation and we were excited to see them return to Australia with David Davidson on Guitar and Vocals, Ash Pearson on Drums and Brett Bamberger on Bass and Vocals.

Revocation kicked off their set with "Diabolical Majesty" and the relentless energy and potent bass work from Brett, was raw and unfiltered and had a aesthetics set off an undeniable charm. As Revocation continued their set with "Nihilistic Violence, The Outer Ones, Madness Opus and Teratogenenesis" Dave Davidson riled up the crowd and instigated movement in the pit while delivering delightfully punchy, thrashy blasts. As the band delivered their last three songs "Lesson In Occult Theft, Godforsaken and Of Unholy Origin" The drum beats delivered by Ash were fast and farce. We were sad to see them leave the stage but we were ready for the one and only Suffocation.

New York death metal legends Suffocation unleashed their fury on the factory theatre with Derek Boyer on the Bass, Terrance Hobbs on Guitars, Ricky Myers on Vocals, Eric Morotti on Drums and Charles Errigo on Guitars.

Suffocation kicked off their set with "Seraphim Enslavement, Thrones of Blood, Breeding the Spawn and Dim Veil of Obscurity" and the band brought an energy to the stage that was off the charts. Ricky Myers delivered insane, authoritative growls, with traditional brutal tones. As the band continued their set with songs including "Pierced From Within, Hymns From the Apocrypha and Liege of Inveracity the tempo variations were sinister and the thick melodies and crushing grooves were fast and blasty supported by technical framework.

As Suffocation played their last song " Infecting the Crypts" the increasingly sharp technical edge caused, spine snapping brutality and a unique recognizable sound.

Suffocation played a set full of timeless masterpieces and they remain one of the best and most influential brutal death metal bands. We can't wait to see them return to Sydney.
