Twinmusix chat to Ryan Phillips from Story Of The Year about there Australian Tour and more
What can fans expect from your Australian tour?
you can expect for dudes smiling, getting drunk, playing music that they love, super grateful for the opportunity to come, we just can't wait to get there.
What gear to use on stage compared to in the studio?
I only use PRS live both custom 22 and the single cut, Iplex Felix rig.
what was your recording process for your newest album wolves?
I spent a couple of years just stockpiling songs, writing, recording. Then Dan took the songs and added lyrics, Then Dan sent the songs to the producer Aaron, we choose the songs that felt more natural and organic, all the drums recorded in Nashville Tennessee, I recorded all the guitars and bass at my house, All the vocals were recorded at Dan's house.
how did you come up with your video for Bang Bang?
The lyrics are dark and desperate, the first thing that people see as a video would be centred around the album title wolves, I thought it would be cool to do a hold dream sequence, where the singer of wakes up and is chased by wolves, the wolves are a metaphor for fear and anxiety and pain, by the end of the video he figures out the only way he can survive is by waking himself up and defeat the wolves.
If you could have any band play one of your songs, which band, which song and in your style or theirs?
The Deftones, their style, praying for rain.
You funded a movie about the rise and fall of the music industry, can you tell me more about this?
The whole idea came from conversations that we had had on the aeroplanes, dressing rooms, hotels and bars. I would have all these conversations with people about the music industry, I thought it would be good to make a movie about how to make a living as an artist.
Do you guys write on the road?
I never stop writing, I write year round, I write on the road, I write at home, I write on napkins in the restaurants.
How do you pick which songs are going to go on your records and which songs are going to be singles?
I think for this album wolf, I sent the band a bunch of songs to the rest of my band members, we choose whatever felt natural, then we record them for our new album.
How do you pick which songs you play on tour?
You always have songs that you know you have to play, I then we pick more energetic songs that will get the audience moving, and that translates to a live setting well.
What's your best tour memory?
Me, my Drummer and my singer and some of the guys from As I Lay Dying, thrice and The Deftones. we would all skateboard in the arenas every night after the shows.
What's your best moment with your fans?
Playing at shows, seeing people singing and dancing along to something that we created.
Anything else you want to announce your fans?
