Twinmusix got to speak to Leigh Kakaty from Pop Evil about their upcoming album and more.
TM - Hi this is Amelia and Elizabeth from Twinmusix and we are here with Leigh Kakaty from Pop Evil, Thank you for having this interview with us today we appreciate it.
LK - Thank You.
TM - You brought out your new album "What Remains" How have fans responded?
LK - Fans have been through the roof about the new album, and it is a little overwhelming. I think it is a week tomorrow, it is still early days, but so far so good. It is absolutely amazing to get all the love and the excitement about the new record.
TM - What was your writing and recording process for "What Remains"?
LK - It varies for every album, but it usually starts with me trying to get as many ideas as I can. I am the lead singer and the owner, and I have to make sure what I am singing about on stage matters to me lyrically. I want to make sure it has me in a good place so I can put out positive energy to our fan base.
TM - What's your favourite song on this album?
LK - I am excited to play our new song "Wishful Thinking" and I am excited to play the rest of our songs and see what sticks in our head, when we start rehearsals.
TM - How did you come up with your Album cover and Who designed it for "What Remains"?
LK - The cover is interesting to me and very important because you think about the volcano that is on our cover and it is very metaphorical to human beings. I feel like in this world so many things and issues try to divide people and it is just crazy. I feel like we are all one life event away from eruption, like one little thing could set someone off and turn a person's life inside out. It was so important to me to walk with a little more gratitude and be responsible to take some of the darkness away and to try to put out some of the positive energy and dealing with the mental health issues on this record and trying to help people know that they are not alone. They might feel the same way that I felt and this album is a little more like therapy for me.
TM - How did you come up with your music video for "What Remains"?
LK - The music videos were done by one of my favourite directors on the planet, Sam Shapiro. I spent a couple of weeks talking to him about what I was thinking about when I was writing the songs and he put down what I was thinking and came up with a concept in his head. Then he pitched it to us, and we tweaked it here and there. It is amazing when directors take your ideas and turn them into Stories. You never know how the video will turn out, and he Nailed it and brought these songs to life visually.
TM - What can fans expect from your Upcoming Tour?
LK - I'm Excited to tour, it has been a while. We have had enough time off now and our last show was Thanksgiving in the USA and we are hungry to get back out with new music. It is going to be an exciting time for sure.
TM - What can fans expect from your setlist?
LK - A lot of Energy, I am not sure what songs we will play because we have to get to rehearsals and hone in. When you have eight albums you have to think of what songs you are going to put on the setlist, so I'm looking forward to that.
TM - Who was the first band you saw live and can you tell us a story?
LK - I don't know if it was my first, but early on I saw Leonard Skynyrd with my family. It kind of set the mood and my love for wanting to be in a rock band. My parents wanted to go and we liked the same kind of music. It was cool but to see families come with their kids and grandparents come with their kids it is three generations, and it makes rock and metal special.
TM - What's your favourite memory of watching someone else perform live and can you tell us a story?
LK - I remember going to an REO Speedwagon show in the past ten years, I hadn't heard them in years, and they were playing my hometown, and I have never heard an Arena sing-along quite like that. There were around ten or fifteen thousand people singing along, and it was incredible to me. After the show, I went home and downloaded all their hits.
TM - REO Speedwagon would be amazing to see live. I would love to see them. If you could travel back in time and see any band in the world, who would you see? I would see The Doors.
LK - I would love to see Jim Morrison play live. I would also like to see the original line up of Pink Floyd and Jimi Hendrix.
TM - We could do a world tour if we had a time machine.
LK - In the DeLorean.
TM - I am in.
TM - If you could have any band play one of your songs, what band would it be, what song would it be, and would it be in your style or their style?
LK - The Doors and I want them to play "Footsteps" That would be sweet. It would be awesome if they used some of their signature keyboard style. Seeing them play one of your songs would be insane. Seeing Jimi Hendrix shred to one of your songs would also be awesome.
TM - That would be so cool.
TM - Is there anything else you want to say to your fans?
LK - I want to thank all our Australian fans for sticking with us.
