HOW DID YOUR FANS RESPOND TO YOUR NEW SONG?

Our band just recently at the end of 2016 released our first full length album titled “Mind = Enemy”. This album had 15 songs on it, 11 brand new and 4 were remakes of songs. Our fan base blew us away with the amount of support we got with all the new song releases. An extremely positive bunch of feedback was received. We received an enormous amount of plays, likes and shares as well as many kind messages. We take a lot of pride in our fans appreciating and liking the music we are making and it is really motivating us a lot it keep doing this and pursue music  for a career.

HOW DO YOUR FANS DESCRIBE YOUR MUSIC?

The majority of our fans describe our music as heavy or metal. Many of them incorporate the variety word with that too since we have conveyed it a lot over the past few years. Our really dedicated fans tend to appreciate the variety of different genre styles we incorporate in our tunes.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE MOMENT WITH YOUR FANS?

Our favourite moment with our fans is when we get to bond with them and create friendships. Our band does the best we can to communicate with our fan base on a more personal level through messages. We’ve always wanted to make ourselves available for anyone to message us if they need us or someone to talk to. Everyone deserves a friend or someone there for them. Also when we play shows we love being able to interact with our friends, fans and family that way. We thoroughly enjoy the fun and positive environment that is created from our music.

HOW HAS YOUR MUSIC CHANGED FROM WHEN YOU FIRST STARTED?

Our music has changed to a more structured and organized project. The project first began as an improvisational duo and now it has evolved to a four piece band that puts a lot of time and structure into our song creations. For example, for our debut EP “release the Disease” we sat down and plugged into our mixer to record a handful of songs on the spot without and prior practicing or writing. Now we have evolved to our brand new album “Mind = Enemy” where we took a good year and more to write a handful of songs and really put the effort into the final song result.

WHAT BANDS INFLUENCED YOUR STYLE OF MUSIC?

All of the members of the band can agree that we all have an incredible amount of bands that have influenced us to be the musicians we are today and influencing our playing/writing styles. If we were to condense that endless list of bands and musicians to a few, we would say Slipknot, Lamb of God, Beartooth, Tool and Avenged Sevenfold.

WHAT BRAND INSTRUMENTS DO YOU USE?

Our vocalist use Apex and Shure microphones for both recording and live performances. Jordan our drummer uses a Gretsch drum set. Our guitarist uses Ibanez and Jackson guitars through Marshall and Orange amplifiers. Lastly, our bassist uses a Fender P Bass through an Ibanez amplifier.

HOW DID YOUR BAND FORM? AND HOW DID YOU DECIDE WHAT TYPE OF MUSIC YOU WERE GOING TO PLAY?

Our band formed over the course of a few years between 2014 and now. The band started as a solo project in 2012, became a duo project in 2014 and then eventually became a four piece band in 2016. We all decided that our band would be best to do Metal Variety because we are all very adamant about metal music and playing metal. However, we didn’t want to limit ourselves to a specific genre or sub-genre of metal, so we chose to incorporate any and all other genres in our metal music. We are extremely happy that we made that decision from the start because it has really broadened our horizons for writing and creating new music. We can make songs for whatever we feel at that given time and also give our audience and anyone new listening to us a variety of genres and songs to give a try.

HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH YOUR BAND NAME AND LOGO?

Our band name was created by our vocalist Sean back in 2012. He was creating a serious of potential band names for his solo project that became this band. He eventually thought of the name “Within Shadows” through the concept of what he wanted the band to be about which was the hardships and negativity that surrounded him in his life and how he coped with those shadows and broke through them. The logo for the band was created by our very good friend Vladyslav Tsarenko over at all4band.com; he is an amazing guy and a phenomenal person to work with!

WHERE DO YOU SEE YOUR BAND SOUND IN THE FUTURE, ARE YOU LOOKING FOR A SIMILAR SOUND OR ARE YOU GOING TO GO IN A DIFFERENT DIRECTION?

We believe we will keep changing our band’s sound over time through finding new equipment and wanting to experiment with new genres and music. For our next album we are already planning on even more variety incorporated, certainly including stuff we have never tackled as artists yet and also genres that we love aside from metal and want to create songs in. For sure the band will always be headed in the same direction, but we will always be trying new things and bringing new things to the table for our fans to keep them on the edge of their seat.

TELL US A RANDOM FACT ABOUT YOURSELF THAT FANS DON’T KNOW?

A random fact about our band is that we all love to prank each other. We are all really good sports about a good funny joke and we tend to pull some funny stuff randomly on each other, even during shows or any situation. So be on the lookout for some funny moments from us, because we are always up to something.

WHO WRITES THE MUSIC IN YOUR BAND OR DO YOU ALL WRITE IT TOGETHER?

A huge majority of the music is created by our vocalist Sean since he devoted all of his time to creating music and recording it in the comfort of his own home. He has a whole recording setup and is always working on new songs and projects. The band as a whole also works on creating music together when we can. This is basically whenever we are together for a practice and can work altogether as a unit. The writing sessions will usually be us jamming random riffs and using improvisation to our advantage. We will film and record all our jams with our Go Pros and later review them. If there are riffs we particularly like, Sean will take those riffs and parts to structure them into a potential song. Then we review those potential songs as a band and decide if we want to use them or let the other members add on to them. Our members also write and structure songs and lyrics on their own time and totally by themselves to add to our music. So a lot of those instances it is just one person writing the songs.

ARE YOU SIGNED WITH ANY RECORD LABELS? IF YES WHO?

We are not signed to a record labels yet. Now that we have a brand new full length album out and are playing shows, we are beginning to send out our stuff tom record labels and seeing if our band will get any bites. So far things have been looking very good. We are certainly going to keep sending our stuff around and see where it gets us. Other than that the only label we are working with would be a press/promotions label called “From the Depths Entertainment”. They have helped us a tonne by helping promote our band through social media and also steer us in the right direction to different people and companies in the industry. We are forever grateful of Mike Bohn and what he has done for us.

COULD YOU BRIEFLY DESCRIBE YOUR MUSIC MAKING PROCESS?

Our music making progress first begins with a rough improve instrumental track. We then take the improve pieces and pick out the parts and riffs we like and then structure a song out of it. We then add lyrics to it in whatever style that fits best. We then lay down the drum track to the song in a recording session, then guitars, bass and finally vocals or any added instruments/effects. The song is then listened to over thoroughly and edited. The band agrees if it is complete and then it is mixed and mastered into the finished project.

WHAT SUBJECTS DO YOU SIGN ABOUT IN YOUR MUSIC?

Within Shadows music deals with a lot of personal issues from subjects like mental health, relationships, suicide awareness and prevention and emotional abuse. We discuss and portray these subjects through our music using actual experiences and feelings that we have gone through in our own lives. In a lot of cases we wrote the lyrics during those times we were going through because we tend to write when our emotions are heightened. We then finally take these topics and try to relate them to anything the listener may have gone through or may be going through and help show reinforce to them that you can get through anything if you are strong and you love yourself.

WHAT’S THE HARDEST THING YOU’VE EVER DONE AS A BAND?

The hardest thing we have ever done as a band so far to this day is find all the members and put the band together that we have today. It has been extremely difficult to find dedicated musicians that we know and around the area we live in that would commit themselves to a musical project that is striving to do music as a full time career. Now that we have overcome that barrier we are working hard every day to pursue our dreams and make them a reality.
