HOW DO YOUR FANS DESCRIBE YOUR MUSIC?
Every fan describes it differently for some strange reason J but many of them mention deep lyrics and interesting melodies.
HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH YOUR BAND NAME AND LOGO?
Thinking up a band name was a pain, actually. It’s much easier to play music than think under what name it should be played. Choosing from a couple of dozen names I finally pointed on Gravity Rain. I don’t know why, it just reflects the mood of the music. The same story is with the logo. It’s simple, easy to read and at the same time interesting and fits the project’s style.
WHAT CHALLENGES HAVE YOU OVERCOME AS A BAND?
Complications of modern music business, struggling to get heard.
WHAT SUBJECTS DO YOU WRITE ABOUT IN YOUR LYRICS?
I tend to write when I’m depressed. So, lyrically I explore my darker self and deal with complexity of my existence. I think the key words that can describe my lyrics are – struggle, love, pain, fear, freedom, self and justice. I don’t have any message to deliver to the audience; my music is the way to cognize myself, so if it helps, inspires or encourages anyone on the way – this is totally beautiful.
IF YOU COULD PICK ANY MUSIC FESTIVAL TO PERFORM AT (IN THE WORLD), WHAT MUSIC FESTIVAL WOULD YOU PICK AND WHY?
Any major fest, really, or as many of them as possible, to be exact. Fests are just the way to reach more people.
WHAT BANDS INFLUENCED YOUR STYLE OF MUSIC?
Well, if we’re talking about what my project sounds like, I’d say Devin Townsend, Type O Negative, Karnivool, Staind, Deftones, Tesseract. For childhood influences I’d mention also Manowar, Dream Theater, Dimmu Borgir, In Flames, Iron Maiden, Helloween .
WHAT BRAND OF INSTRUMENTS DO YOU USE?
I use mostly custom baritone-guitars made by a great luthier in our city.
HOW DID YOUR BAND FORM? AND HOW DID YOU DECIDE WHAT TYPE OF MUSIC YOU WERE GOING TO PLAY?
The Gravity Rain project evolved from many other previous bands and projects I was a part of. And every time musically I was “getting there” – to the music that I really want to play. And I still am. It’s a fun process, actually. Every time I think “that’s it!” – it’s actually not. Keeps you motivated and interested.
HAVE YOU CHANGED ANY MEMBERS SCIENCE YOU FIRST STARTED?
Yeah, I changed a couple of line-ups before I eventually decided to go alone.
WHO WRITES THE MUSIC IN YOUR BAND OR DO YOU ALL WRITE IT TOGETHER?
I as a mastermind write 98% of music. But there’re exceptions sometimes. Our track “Dive” for instance was written by our former drummer Nikita Kochkin, lyrics were written by Anton Mishin and I did all the rest.
WHERE DO YOU SEE YOUR SOUND IN THE FUTURE, ARE YOU LOOKING FOR A SIMILAR SOUND OR ARE YOU GOING TO GO IN A DIFFERENT DIRECTION?
I tend to think the sound will gravitate toward more progressive, even more melodic and sometimes mellow direction. Although keeping focused, heavy riffs and drums at the music’s core.
AS WE ARE PROMOTING YOU, IS THERE ANYTHING COMING UP LIKE ALBUM LAUNCHES OR TOUR DATES YOU WOULD LIKE US TO PROMOTE ON OUR SITE FOR YOU?
Actually no. I’m in a process of writing new songs at the moment. Although it would be nice if you mention the fact that I started “Danny Klaven Studios” as a mixing\mastering service for metal and rock artists, and they’re most welcome to book the time.
